Reading diaries

Reading is such a brilliant adventure for children as they begin school. Here at Bilsthorpe FHA we really value books, and giving children the opportunity to explore them and develop their reading skills. Every day the children will put their reading diary into a special box in the classroom - these will be checked and for each reading signature they have in their diary, the reading signatures will go towards a whole class reward.

Reading Leaflet (This is a leaflet which supports adults with how to support children in their reading)

Children will have their very own homework book. At the start of each half term, the children will be given a new homework grid sheet which will include different activities. It is expected that each child completes one piece of homework a week. On Monday afternoons we will have our very own homework celebration!

Homework Grid

Each week on a Friday the children will be given class spellings to practice at home. The following Friday the children will have a spelling test. In year 1, children will also bring home a phonics reading booklet to practice their real and alien words ready for their phonics screening test.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The statutory Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is yet to be confirmed for 2019.However, the details of the screening check are as followed:

The check is a list of 40 words which children will read one -to-one with their class teacher.  It will assess phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1.

It will check that your child can:

  • Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words e.g. n-igh-t

  • ·Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, windmill.

  • ·Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as ‘pseudo words’.

To help your child at home with their phonics, please see the websites below.

As well as reading their reading books, children can go on these websites to practice their phonics:

What are Year 1 learning this term?

(Autumn 1)

In the first part of this half term we will be learning about instructions. We will explore how to follow instructions, give instructions and then make/write our own instructions! We will use a Talk for Writing process to help us along the way.

In our writing we will be looking at different punctuation; finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.

Useful websites

In the first part of this half term we will be learning about the value of numbers and how to show them using objects and pictures. We will solve problems and use our knowledge of place value in different situations.

After we are confident with the value of numbers we will move on to addition and subtraction. During this unit we will use a range of resources to help us find answers and solve problems. We will look very closely at mathematical language which links to addition and subtraction and what the signs (+, - and =) mean.

BIG QUESTION: What makes us special?

Our exciting topic this term is all about ourselves!

What makes each and every one of us special?                   Where do we come from?

Who are our families?                                  What do our bodies look like?

How have we changed since being a baby?               What are our senses?

What are the significant moments in our life?

In PE we will be learning and practicing throwing and catching skills.

In Computing we will be learning at how to make an Algorithm.

In Art we will be creating our own self-portraits and maybe even each others!

Autumn 1 Homework grid

WC 1st October

This week the Year 1's have written up their set of instructions on how to make a jam sandwich. They used imperative verbs and time connectives! They are very excited for when they actually make their jam sandwiches for Mrs Ingle's tea party!

Year 1 have continued their What makes us special? topic and have created some portraits using the paint programme on the computers!

WC 24th September

This week year 1 were introduced to something exciting - African Land Snails! These are now our class pets and the children were extremely excited to meet them. We had chance to discuss names for them and have a vote. There are two big snails and a baby - the children decided that it is a mummy, daddy and their baby. They have named them George, Ezra and baby Elsa!

WC 17th September

This week we begun our English topic which is all about instructions! Something crazy happened! Year 1 were told by Clumber Bear (Class Bear) that an alien had appeared at Clumber park and we needed to read some instructions on how to catch him! The children were extremely excited!

In our topic 'What makes us special?', The children explored what they look like through using mirrors to create a self portrait. They were brilliant!

WC 10th September

This week for Year 1 has been all about learning how things work in Year 1. We have made our own class charter, which each child signed and shook hands to show they agree! We have introduced ourselves to Miss Mann, so that she can start to learn who we are and what we enjoy doing.

Look back with pride and forward with confidence
