Reading diaries
Reading is such a brilliant adventure for children as they begin school. Here at Bilsthorpe FHA we really value books, and giving children the opportunity to explore them and develop their reading skills. Every day the children will put their reading diary into a special box in the classroom - these will be checked and for each reading signature they have in their diary, the reading signatures will go towards a whole class reward.
Reading Leaflet (This is a leaflet which supports adults with how to support children in their reading)
Homework
Children will have their very own homework book. At the start of each half term, the children will be given a new homework grid sheet which will include different activities. It is expected that each child completes one piece of homework a week. On Monday afternoons we will have our very own homework celebration!

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
The statutory Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is yet to be confirmed for 2019.However, the details of the screening check are as followed:
The check is a list of 40 words which children will read one -to-one with their class teacher. It will assess phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1.
It will check that your child can:
Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words e.g. n-igh-t
·Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, e.g. cat, sand, windmill.
·Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as ‘pseudo words’.
To help your child at home with their phonics, please see the websites below.
As well as reading their reading books, children can go on these websites to practice their phonics:

(Autumn 1)
English
In the first part of this half term we will be learning about instructions. We will explore how to follow instructions, give instructions and then make/write our own instructions! We will use a Talk for Writing process to help us along the way.
In our writing we will be looking at different punctuation; finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.

Maths
In the first part of this half term we will be learning about the value of numbers and how to show them using objects and pictures. We will solve problems and use our knowledge of place value in different situations.
After we are confident with the value of numbers we will move on to addition and subtraction. During this unit we will use a range of resources to help us find answers and solve problems. We will look very closely at mathematical language which links to addition and subtraction and what the signs (+, - and =) mean.
